Split a PDF into separate files

Split a document by page range, or burst it into one file per page, and download the results as a ZIP. Every file is opened, changed and saved by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, nothing is stored, and no account is needed.

Can text from the pages I did not keep still be recovered from the result?

No. A PDF library will by default save a change by appending it and leaving the original bytes in place, which means a removed page is unhooked from the document while its content still sits in the file. This tool writes the result as a full save instead, so the pages you did not keep are not carried along inside it. A 40 page document split down to one page goes from carrying all 38 KB of the text to 1.5 KB.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The split runs in this browser tab and the file never leaves your device, so there is nothing to upload and nothing to delete afterwards.

How do I choose what ends up in each file?

Give the page ranges you want and each range is written out as its own document. The page order inside a range is the order it had in the original.

Is Split free?

Yes. Split is one of 9 free tools, with no account and no watermark. Seven of them have no limit at all; PDF to Excel and PII Redact are free on a document of up to 20 pages.
