Compress a PDF
Make a PDF small enough to email or to get past an upload limit, without losing the text inside it. Every file is opened, changed and saved by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, nothing is stored, and no account is needed.
- A document carrying text is packed down, not redrawn: it still searches
- Name the size you need, or choose how hard to compress
- Redrawing the pages goes much further, and is offered rather than done
- Page 1 of a redrawn result is shown before you save, because it is destructive
- Takes 60-85% off an image-heavy scan, which has no text layer to lose
How small can it make my file?
You give it the number you have to hit rather than a quality preset, and it searches for the largest result that still fits under that number. Somebody capped at 200 KB wants the most readable 200 KB, not the smallest file the tool could produce.
What happens if it cannot reach my number?
It tells you, and it names the size it did reach. It never reports a miss as a success, because the portal you are uploading to will reject the file and a wrong number costs you the trip.
Will the text still be selectable afterwards?
Yes, unless you ask for the pages to be redrawn. A document carrying its own text is packed down without being redrawn at all, so it still searches, copies and prints as it did; what that saves is structural and it is usually modest. Redrawing the pages as pictures is where the real saving is, and it costs the text layer, the links and the bookmarks, so it is offered as a second step with the size it would need to beat already on screen.
Will the text still be readable afterwards?
Page one of a redrawn result is drawn on screen before anything is saved. Redrawing is destructive, and only the person holding the document can say whether the digits on it are still readable. A scan has no text layer to lose, so it is redrawn straight away.
Can the file come out bigger than it went in?
No. A document made of text grows when it is redrawn as pictures, so where that happens the original is the better copy and the original is what you get back.
