Password-protect a PDF

Encrypt a document with an open password, restrict printing and copying, or stamp a watermark across every page. Every file is opened, changed and saved by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, nothing is stored, and no account is needed.

What encryption does it use?

AES-256, at revision 6, which is the strongest the PDF format defines. It is applied in your browser, so the unprotected file never leaves your device.

Can you recover my password if I lose it?

No, and nobody can. The password is never sent to us and never stored anywhere, so there is no reset to perform. Keep it somewhere safe before you close the tab.

What is the difference between the two passwords?

One password is needed to open the document at all. The other governs what somebody who can already open it is allowed to do, such as printing it or copying text out. You can set either or both.

Does a protected file still open in ordinary readers?

Yes. The result is a normal PDF carrying standard encryption, so any reader will ask for the password and then open it.
