When is this better than writing a sentence?

When you already know the steps. Dragging four tools into order and setting each one up is quicker than describing them, and it leaves nothing to interpretation.

Does the chain survive a reload?

Yes. It is kept on this device as you build it, so a stray refresh in the middle of a long chain does not lose it.

Does it run once per file or once over the whole set?

Once over every file you picked. Each step says what it will do and what it hands to the step after it, so a chain that collapses many files into one, such as a merge, is visible before you run it.

Can I keep a workflow and use it again?

Yes. A chain can be saved under a name and run again later by typing that name, and it keeps the corrections you made rather than the words you first used.
